Marvel originally planned to end Ultimate Wolverine series early, but the ending of the Ultimate Universe line gave it extra life
Ultimate Wolverine writer Chris Condon reveals how the series was extended from 12 to 16 issues by Marvel

One thing about Wolverine is that he doesn't go down easily. And the same can be said for Marvel's Ultimate Wolverine series from Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio, which will wrap up at 16 issues later this year alongside other Ultimate line books.
Recently, Popverse spoke with Ultimate Wolverine writer Chris Condon about the series, as well as whether the end of the Ultimate line impacted his plans for the story he was telling about this alternate version of Logan. It was then that Condon revealed the original scope of Ultimate Wolverine.
"I was always under the impression at first that we were going to be a 12 issue series, and then we got an extension to go alongside [Ultimate] Endgame. So I always knew that my book was going to have an end. I didn't necessarily know that it was going to be, you know, whether it could have gone for more issues or whether that was the end of everything, I didn't know," Condon said.
Even though the book got an extension, that didn't affect the ending that Condon had had in mind for Logan, long before he got the news.
"But not coming from my perspective, I always kind of had an ending in mind. And then when we did get the extension I still had the ending that I wanted to do in issue #12 and then we're doing additional stories. So I sort of look at the four additional issues as a sort of coda spinning out of the decisions and events of issues 11 and 12 of Ultimate Wolverine. And that it didn't affect that ending. But the four issues that come after certainly were affected by that decision."
It makes sense for Condon and Cappuccio to treat the four remaining issues of Ultimate Wolverine, after the main story wrapped, as a "coda." If we've learned anything from all these years that Wolverine has existed in Marvel Comics, it's that the dude is full of stories. Wherever he is, he is always the guy at the local dive bar with the most baffling personal lore. He has literally been to Hell and back and everywhere in between, and there is plenty to be explored with him.
It's also worth noting that this version of Logan has gone through a lot (it wouldn't be a Wolverine story if Logan didn't crash out at least once, right?). I mean, the guy freaking killed Nightcrawler while being mind-controlled by a bunch of jerks. The solicits for the upcoming issues of Ultimate Wolverine have hinted that there's more to be mined from his Winter Soldier conditioning, so I'm sure we'll finally get the full exposé on that chapter in Ultimate Logan's life in due time.
