Before the next two Avengers movies from Marvel Studios — 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars — there was Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars, a nine-issue epic about what happens when Doctor Doom gains ultimate power at the cost of… well, everything else, really. For fans of Marvel Comics, the 2015 series by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic is a beloved classic, and for those MCU fans unfamiliar with the comic book lore, it’s pretty much a must-read. But… what secrets still remain from Secret Wars, even a decade later? A new book is about to reveal all.
Launching on Kickstarter this week, Behind The Panels of Secret Wars is 300-page look at the creation of the 2015 comic book series and the many comics that accompanied it as it took over Marvel’s comic book line for months. Written by former Marvel editor Ellie Pyle, the oversize book will include insights from Hickman and Ribic, editor Tom Brevoort, and creators Kieron Gillen, Jason Aaron, and Gerry Duggan, as well as unseen pitches that never got greenlit, character designs that have never been released to the public before, and so much more.

“It’s been a fascinating journey back into Battleworld via the memories of the writers, artists, and editors who built it! So many cool stories, from ‘the most fun Marvel summit ever’ to the final deadline crunch for this ‘event that was all events’,” Pyle said in a statement about the project.
Behind The Panels of Secret Wars is the first in a series of deluxe retrospectives from Southern Californian publisher Pan-Galactic Universal Worldwide (PUG-W for short) aimed to truly interrogating and illuminating some of comics’ finest stories. “We treat the comics with the reverence and depth they deserve and show what goes into making a huge event comic from the mouths of the people who were there,” promised PUG-W editor-in-chief John Barner. “This book and the extras that are planned for the entire campaign will showcase what PUG-W as a company is about.”
Behind The Panels of Secret Wars launches on Kickstarter November 4, offering fans of Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios alike the chance to get in on the ground floor of this look back at one of Marvel’s finest comic book storylines — and, perhaps, a look ahead at what’s awaiting the MCU over the next couple of years. More information about the book, and the campaign, can be found at the book's pre-launch page. Sign up now to be first in line when the project launches — and a chance to be part of Marvel history.
