Marvel's lost Last Starfighter comic returns ... just in time for the sequel to the movie

The Last Starfighter comic book has been out of print but it is coming back just as the long-awaited sequel comic hits shelves this summer.

Greetings, Starfighter. We’re strapping back in and setting off for Starfighter Command. While we’re still waiting for the long-gestating sequel film to finally happen (though we are getting a sequel in comic book form), The Last Starfighter is returning as a comic book. Marvel is bringing back the original The Last Starfighter comic back into print for the first time in years – because we’ve got worlds to save.

Back in 1984, The Last Starfighter hit cinemas and became a cult classic. It capitalized on arcade culture at the time as Alex Rogan, a simple kid who was obscenely good at a video game, became the hero the galaxy needed. The special effects were ahead of their time, and, like Tron, The Last Starfighter marked a new era for sci-fi films.

The same year the film came out, Marvel released a comic book adaptation. Written by Bill Mantlo, with art by Bret Blevins and cover art by Jackson Guice, the comic version of The Last Starfighter expanded on the film’s world while capturing the original spirit of a kid who finds himself at the heart of an intergalactic conflict. Unfortunately, the comic has been out of print for years now, but that is about to change.

Mad Cave has announced that The Last Starfighter Movie Adaptation is returning to shelves later this year. This new volume includes the original three-issue comic in a new paperback collection. The Last Starfighter Movie Adaptation goes on sale on June 23, 2026.

We may never get the sequel to The Last Starfighter on screen, but the series lives on in comic book format. June 2026 sees a new sequel comic coming out, also from Mad Cave, and it is giving us a chance to reconnect with the original story’s comic book adaptation at the same time.
