In the Pop Spot at New York Comic Con 2025, Popverse’s Ashley V. Robinson sat down with legendary cape comics writer Tom King to discuss a variety of topics. King has penned plenty of A-list superheroes, including The Vision, Batman, and Supergirl, and now he’s writing Wonder Woman. And in conversation with Robinson, he stated that Matriarch will be the Big Bad of the whole Wonder Woman run.
The subject was broached by Robinson, who said, “I would be absolutely remiss if I didn’t ask you about Matriarch. It’s the number one thing everyone told me to ask you about.”
“We’ve been building up to her since the first panel of Wonder Woman #1,” King said. “She’s the Big Bad of the whole run.” After confirming the villainess was part of his original pitch for the series, King explained, “We were trying to create a Lex Luthor or a Joker for Wonder Woman.”
King brought up Cheetah, but noted that she and Wonder Woman have a “complicated” relationship. “Some would say romantic,” Robinson remarked. “Complicated,” King repeated. “But to give [Wonder Woman] a Big Bad who is just an incredible challenge, that’s what we’re going for.”
King explained that they started with Sovereign, but that he was always a smokescreen, with Matriarch standing behind him. “She’s the daughter of Sovereign and an Amazon, and you see these flashes of the future where she’s taken over the entire planet, and everyone bows down to her,” King said. “Except Wonder Woman.”
