Deadpool 3 director casts doubt on current release date

That May 2024 date is looking pretty shaky, reveals Shawn Levy

It's hard to deny Marvel Studios is having a bit of a hard time right now. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania wasn't the hit the studio thought it would be, Secret Invasion is widely regarded as the weakest Marvel Disney+ show released so far, and now upcoming series are being cancelled or rebooted left and right in hopes of restructuring the entire TV operation. A potentially bright spot on the 2024 horizon was Deadpool 3, but the movie's director isn't that sure anymore about its chances of meeting the current May 3, 2024 release date.

Director Shawn Levy, of Free Guy and Stranger Things fame, was recently interviewed by The Wrap about his upcoming series All the Light We Cannot See, and of course, the matter of Deadpool 3's long hiatus was brought up. All he could say is that roughly half the movie had already been shot and edited before the start of the actors strike.

"I wish I knew," he said about the movie's release. "I don’t even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3... Certainly, the actors’ strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We’ve shot half the movie. I’ve edited half the movie. We’re dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year".

Though the WGA strike has already been resolved and a resolution to the SAG-AFTRA strike was expected to happen shortly afterwards, negotiation hit another roadblock last week, with the major studios walking away from the bargaining table. Even before the strikes, keeping track of Disney and Marvel's Phase 5 and 6 plans and dates was hard, but the recent events pushed many projects even further. At the same time, however, Deadpool 3 was moved up, which spoke positively about the upcoming threequel. The movie is bringing in Huge Jackman's Wolverine from the Fox continuity of X-Men movies, to the delight of fans. But when will we be able to see it?

While you wait for Deadpool 3, there are plenty of exciting movies coming soon to cinemas as well as streaming, and you can find them all in our up-to-date guide.
