Critical Role’s Whitney Moore didn’t expect Tyranny and Wicks to become such a duo
OG Critical Role cast member Sam Riegel could be considered the Sherlock to Moore's Watson - if Sherlock was a lot more religious and Watson was, well, a pink demon

Here's a hot take for you - even more than its fantastical settings or iconic cast members, the reason people love Critical Role is the relationships between its many characters. From Jester and Fjord to Vex and Vax, we care for these characters, in part, because of how they care for each other. And in Campaign 4, one of the relationships that's been the most fun to watch is the one between the demonic Tyranny (played by Whitney Moore) and Wicander Halovar (played by OG Roler Sam Riegel), AKA Wicks.
So naturally, when we sat down with Moore herself in a recent interview, we had to ask about how that relationship developed. And if you know anything about the flow of TTRPG live play, you won' be surprised to hear that it developed in a way Moore couldn't have seen coming.
"The beautiful nature of this type of storytelling," said Moore, "Is that you don't know what any other character is going to do. [Riegel and I] had our characters and we kind of knew a bit about what each other was about, but everything that he has done has surprised me in the best ways."
(Taking a second to note that Riegel spitting a bunch of water over the table in episode one to remain in character in episode one does, technically, fall under this category.)
"I've said this before," she continued, "But I really thought I was going to be the one to troll him and force him to be the voice of reason. But no, he’s making Tyranny be a babysitter. And it's so funny. But I think I'll find some ways to get him back for that."
Of that we have very little doubt, Whitney.
With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:
- How to watch Critical Role in order
- Travis Willingham on the differences between The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein
- Taliesin Jaffe on playing Mollymauk Tealeaf for Campaign 2 vs. playing him for Prime Video
- Matt Mercer's homebrew warrior class (created originally for Vin Diesel)
...and much, much more. Roll initiative, player. Magic awaits.
