The big surprise in gaming this fall has been the success of Dispatch, a superhero office comedy from AdHoc Studio, who were formed from the developers let go after Telltale Games fell apart, and Critical Role, whose cadre of nerdy-ass voice actors make up a good chunk of the cast. Not only did it manage to sell more than 1 million copies before the final episode was even released, but it looks like Dispatch may meet its 3-year sales goals 12x faster than expected.

Dispatch is a narrative adventure game with branching storylines that follows Robert Robertson, aka Mecha Man, as he guides a group of reformed villains into being the best versions of themselves. It has filled a hole in the market that has existed since Telltale, which specialized in narrative-focused adventure games like this, folded in 2018. According to developer AdHoc Studio, they had a “bull case” for sales over a three-year period that they are now expecting to hit much earlier.

“We’re on track to do that in three months,” Michael Choung, an executive producer on Dispatch, said in a recent interview. “So the bull case in three months… we were confident that people would like it. I think the degree to which it would be successful is something that I certainly didn’t anticipate.”

Choung doesn’t share what those sales figures were in the statement, but his implication that even their higher estimates of sales are so close to being hit is probably why the developer has said that they are looking at doing a second season. As we learned through playing Dispatch, you can’t keep a good superhero down.
