We can’t rely on much in the video game industry – other than near-constant layoffs – but we can certainly rely on the ability of modders to bring us new content for games years after they were first released. It isn’t just Fallout 4 that has gotten countless mods over the years – Fallout: New Vegas is still getting new mods every year. One that was just unveiled, however, seeks to help players uncover a lost bit of Fallout history.
The team behind Fallout: Revelation Blues has released their first demo, but understanding it requires a bit of a history lesson. Though Bethesda has been developing Fallout games since 2008’s Fallout 3, they weren’t the original creators of the series. Black Isle Studios was in the middle of creating their own Fallout 3 when it was closed by Interplay in 2003 and their version, codenamed Van Buren, was never released. However, a leaked demo and a design document have surfaced over the years.
Using those materials, the team behind Fallout: Revelation Blues has begun recreating what this lost Fallout game would have looked like. The first demo showcases “a snippet of the area [the modders] have developed,” which includes the mining community of Burham Springs, which is a “small mining town that was once under NCR control” but has been “abandoned due to a terrible incident.”
We’ll never really know what Black Isles’ Fallout 3 would have looked or played like – the Fallout: Revelation Blues mod uses the Fallout: New Vegas engine developed by Bethesda – but the modders have done their best to resurrect a lost piece of video game history for fans to enjoy. The demo for Fallout: Revelation Blues is currently available, though no release date for the full version has been confirmed yet.
