One of the coolest things about Absolute Batman is the way the series has reimagined some of Batman’s most iconic villains. We’ve seen a monstrous version of the Joker, Penguin with crutch-guns, and now it looks like we’ll be getting a new version of Clayface. We’ve already seen hints of the villain with Project K.L.A.Y. in Absolute Batman #10, but now it looks like the twisted shapeshifter will be making a full appearance.
Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder let the detail slip as he was talking about the relationship between him and artist Nick Dragotta. “We talk all day every day. I can show you my phone,” Scott Snyder says during an interview with Comics Central at Comic Con Portugal. “Nick and I already texted like five times today about Clayface designs. Nick has become one of my best friends in the world, but he lives just across the bay from me. Like where I live is on the ocean, but it’s like a peninsula.”
“He lives on the other side of the ocean right there. He takes a boat ferry over, and we work in my office. Every couple of weeks we get together in person, and we do the designs and we go back and forth, and we lay out the issues. It’s super collaborative. I can’t say enough good things about what a great partner he is.”
It’s a touching statement about their relationship but buried in there is a mention of Nick working on Absolute Clayface designs. It’s worth noting that DC Studios will be releasing a Clayface movie in October, so introducing an Absolute version of the character in the comics at the same time sounds like good corporate synergy.
We’ve seen what Nick Dragotta has done to other Batman characters, so I could only imagine how he’ll handle the body horror of Clayface. Whatever designs he’s been texting Scott Snyder, I’m sure they will blow us away.
