The League of Legends MMO has a fitting nickname inside Riot Games: The Grail
After a decade in development, Riot still sees its League of Legends MMO as a “worthy quest”

For the past six years, we've known that Riot Games was making an MMO set in the world of Runeterra, best known for its League of Legends game franchise. We've since learned that it's been in development since 2016, and that it may not come out until 2030... meaning someone could be born after this game was first conceived, then be old enough to play it with their friends before it comes out. That sounds like quite a long development process, and internally at Riot it's known as the Grail.
(That is, of course, a reference to the Holy Grail, a sacred chalice from Arthurian legend whose quest to find it became a metaphorical analogy for a goal that is extremely hard to do.)
While speaking at PAX West in Seattle this weekend, Riot Games' co-founder/chairman/chief product officer Mark Merrill touched on this 'untitled Runeterra MMO' briefly.
"We know what players' hopes and dreams are. It's on us as a team... can we succeed in the execution? But what a worthy quest," says Merrill. "We jokingly call it 'The Grail' internally because we're like, 'Fuck, many a brave knight will die on the grail quest, but fuck it, it's the grail, so let's go.' That's the mindset that we try to cultivate, and that's hard to do at scale, but I think we're doing a reasonable job, and I think the future is incredibly bright."
When he says "the future," he ain't kidding: remember, Merrill has recently said that this untitled Runeterra MMO is expected to be released before 2030.
