There's a new MTG rule: All sets will come with 4 Commander Decks (at least for all of 2027!)

Commander players, rejoice! Magic: The Gathering will put out 24 different Commander decks in 2027

Commander is one of Magic: The Gathering's most popular formats, and I don't think it's completely out of line for me to say that the release of a new Magic set doesn't feel complete without at least one pre-constructed Commander deck. Case in point: last fall's Universes Beyond set, Marvel's Spider-Man, didn't have a Commander deck, and since the set itself was smaller than the average Magic set, the effect of it was rather underwhelming.

But there is a bright future ahead for Magic. As announced at MagicCon Amsterdam, every Magic: The Gathering set releasing in 2027 will include four Commander decks. This begins with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, an underwater-themed set in Magic's multiverse that will be released on February 5. Looking ahead at 2027, beyond Nauctis, there's an unannounced Universes Beyond set due out on April 9, then Kamigawa: Titanbreach set for June 4, then another unannounced Universes Beyond set releasing on August 6, then Zhalfir comes out October 1, and the year wraps up with another unannounced Universes Beyond set due out on November 19.

So, if you're math-inclined, that means that 2027 will offer you 24 Commander decks in total. And because of how Commander is played in pods of 4, that means that everyone in your pod can play with a different, newly released Commander deck as each set comes out. How exciting!

In the meantime, I've been having a great ol' time playing with my Nick Fury Commander deck from Marvel Super Heroes
