The people crave whimsy, and Magic: The Gathering's Lorwyn Eclipsed set is here to deliver it and then some. Now, coupled with a collaboration with the legendary Jim Henson Company, the worlds of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor have never felt more magical, thanks to a short film that debuted last week.
A Boggart Ballad was a music video directed by Brian Henson (son of Jim, and director of both The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island) that debuted January 5; described on MTG's YouTube channel as, "Dare to enter the ever-changing plane of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, two halves of one enchanting yet divided plane. Travel between day and night, harmony and chaos, and discover your true self." It's classic Henson, as you can see for yourself:
If you watched that, you probably got the sense that a lot of work was put into the 3-minute short. And, chances are, you've already dedicated hours of your life to watching behind-the-scenes featurettes from your favorite fantasy movies. Now, something appealing to the middle of this Venn diagram is a new behind-the-scenes documentary from Magic: The Gathering about how the Lorwyn Eclipsed short film was made with The Jim Henson Company. Take a look at it below.
The Jim Henson Company produces work with a magical quality to it, not just in the fantasy setting of their projects, but in how the films themselves are made. And there's an old saying that seeing the "seams" holding together something magical can kill the illusion, but that isn't the case here. Seeing a puppeteer operate a puppet from across the soundstage in this video still feels like wizardry, to me at least. I'm watching footage of it play out in front of my eyes, but I still have no idea how the hell the animatronics used by The Jim Henson Company have such a striking range of expressions. It's unreal.
Lorwyn Eclipsed will drop January 23, 2026, with pre-release events beginning January 16-22.
