We are at an unprecedented place in the history of Magic: The Gathering. There are more crossovers with other franchises in pop culture than ever before, with Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy set becoming the top-selling MTG set in history before it even came out. Whatever your opinions are of Magic's Universes Beyond crossover sets, it's clear that they're here to stay. 

That said, Magic's Universes Within (meaning, their in-universe sets) aren't going away either. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Mark Rosewater, Magic: The Gathering's design lead, answered a question about Universes Beyond on his Tumblr. A fan wrote in to Rosewater, saying, "I’ve been seeing a sentiment online a fair bit that I thought is worthy of note, people are urging others to support Lorwyn to show universes within sets are liked, I suspect because there’s a growing fear that with how successful universes beyond is, we could see a further decrease in universes within sets per year. Whether you agree or not with that notion, the concern alone I think represents its own problem." 

Rosewater replied, "I understand the fear. I can only continually state that having in-Multiverse sets is important for the business. We are doing a lot (TV, movies, comics) with our property so we want to continue using and developing it, and having elements completely under our control is vital for being able to make viable schedules. Also, Universes Beyond is not an endless well." 

So there you have it, folks. The Magic Multiverse is alive and well, and is simply too much of a boon for Wizards of the Coast to give up. Chances are that you first fell in love with Magic: The Gathering precisely because of the level of detail in each of its multiverse settings. I hope that this placates any anxieties you may have had about the future of Magic.
