Sorry, rat deck builders: TMNT has made Magic: The Gathering rat decks more expensive to build
If you've been hoping to get your hands on a copy of the Rat Colony Magic: The Gathering card, TMNT's Rat King, Verminister is throwing a wrench your way

Many rat decks have been made in Magic: The Gathering, and many more will be made in the future. But in the present, rat decks are pricier to make than they typically are, thanks to Magic: The Gathering's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set's introduction of a brand new rat commander card to the game: Rat King, Verminister.
With Rat King, Verminister, you can essentially blood the battlefield with rats if you play your cards right. And as can be gleaned by listings on TCGPlayer, copies of Rat Colony before the release of the TMNT set ranged from from $4 to $5.73, but now, a single Rat Colony will run you $9 to $9.72 at this time of writing. In other words, the card has doubled in price ever since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out on March 6, 2026.
So why the rise in price? Essentially, Rat Colony is a card that, for most rat decks, players will want several copies of. Rat Colony gets more powerful when you have more rats on the battlefield, much like Rat King, Verminister. As such, in order to make a rat deck with several copies of Rat Colony in it, you need multiple copies of what is an almost $10 card now. That adds up.
With anything in Magic: The Gathering, prices are subject to fluctuation. So chances are, over time, Rat Colony will depreciate in market price. Until then, I'll remain patient in the formation of my rat deck.
