Marvel Cosmic Invasion is the Annihilation video game fans didn't even know they wanted, and it's arriving this holiday season

Marvel's latest video game is based on the comic book story that created the Guardians of the Galaxy

A beloved Marvel comic book series from nearly 20 years ago is the basis of Marvel’s latest video game, with the announcement of Marvel Cosmic Invasion, a retro sidescroller for the Nintendo Switch that takes its inspiration from, of all things, the Annihilation event that created the modern Guardians of the Galaxy.

Unfortunately, Groot, Rocket et al aren’t playable characters in the game as far as we can tell, but there are some surprising choices in there: who saw Nova or Phyla-Vell coming? Some of the bigger names in the game are Captain America, Wolverine, Venom, and Spider-Man… But you can see them all, and more, in the trailer for the game, right here:

The official description of the game goes like this:

“A cosmic battle awaits! After Annihilus launched an unprecedented attack across the galaxy, all life hangs in the balance. Nova, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Phyla-Vell, Captain America, and many more heroes, both Earth-born and cosmic, will join forces in a star-spanning brawling adventure against the deadly Annihilation Wave. From New York City to the depths of the Negative Zone, the future of the universe will be fought across the stars in Marvel Cosmic Invasion!”

Marvel Cosmic Invasion will be released this holiday season for the Nintendo Switch.
