McDonalds is building their own version of Disneyland – as a game

Ronald McDonald wants you to log on and visit a virtual recreation of his corporate mascot wonderland

Those who grew up knowing the magic of two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickled onions and a sesame seed bun are very familiar with McDonaldland, the fantasy world populated by Ronald McDonald, Grimace, the Hamburglar and a number of similarly burger-themed mascots since the 1960s — and now, thanks to a technological upgrade, it’s a world they can revisit without hitting up the drive-through.

McDonalds has launched McDonaldland VR, a virtual recreation of the corporate playland created in 1963 by the fast food giant available on Meta Horizon Worlds (via Meta Quest VR) and web VR. In the digital McDonaldland, players will get the chance to explore food-themed worlds like the Apple Pie Tree Forest, Filet-O-Fish Lake, and Hamburger Patch, hunt for hidden collectibles and easter eggs, and play mini-games including the Mt. McDonaldland Shake Challenge. More to the point, they’ll also get to hang out with the Hamburglar, Grimace, and other nostalgic corporate icons that have otherwise disappeared from the mascot landscape. Think of it like Tron, but if it were made by 1980s ad executives hoping you would feel snackish before too long.

Of course, this all comes as a promotional tool for the relaunched McDonaldland Meal, available for a limited time at your favorite McDs. The nostalgic meal deal kit includes your choice of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, fries, a limited-edition Mt. McDonaldland Shake, and one of six collectible McDonaldland character souvenir kits (the latter available while supplies last). It’s enough to fuel your body before you plug in, turn on, and drop out into a virtual nostalgic play world for a few hours.

More information about McDonaldland VR can be found here. Anyone else hungry after all of this?
