D&D is doing its first ever R-rated setting... and the lawyers had a $#!+ ton of notes

The new Dark Sun books for Dungeons & Dragons are so brutal, they had to put a warning label on it.

One of the ~~hell~~ heck appeals of D&D has always been the ability to visit any world and play with any theme. Dark Sun served as a counterpoint to the heroic fantasy of Dragonlance or Faerun, but, with the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons 5E supplement for Dark Sun, Wizards of the Coast is pushing the envelope further than ever before. This new Dark Sun book is supposedly so brutal that D&D’s lawyers forced them to slap a warning label on it.

During their keynote presentation on the opening night of GenCon 2026, Dungeons & Dragons dropped plenty of big news for players. Among the announcements was the update that Dark Sun is coming back. During a pre-brief for press ahead of the official announcement, Greg Bilsland, Executive Producer for Dungeons & Dragons, said they were, “bringing back Dark Sun as D&D’s first Mature-rated setting. So much so that the lawyers actually told us we had to shrink wrap this thing and put a big warning on it for the kinds of content that it’s gonna contain.”

He then shared the actual warning label, just in case you think he’s being hyperbolic. It reads, “Mature Content. Reader Discretion is Strongly Advised. Contains depictions of violence, bloodshed, nudity, and sexuality, inspired by the brutal world of Arthas.”

This isn’t exactly surprising for Dark Sun, which has always been a world where the best you can hope is to survive. Arthas is not a place for heroes. Judging by the bloody trailer that they showed during their presentation, which started with the visual of a man being relieved of his head and spine in brutal fashion, it seems that D&D wants to push Dark Sun even further than before. Just as long as their lawyers sign off on it first.
