Having successfully transformed Five Nights at Freddy’s from a gaming phenomenon into a movie franchise, Blumhouse is looking to repeat the trick with another fan-favorite horror game property, announcing plans to bring Phasmophobia to the big screen.
No details were released about the potential movie — which means not only no release date, but no writers, directors, or even producers identified — but the Phasmophobia movie will be produced by Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, in association with Kinetic Games Limited, the publisher of the game itself.
For those unfamiliar with Phasmophobia, it’s a multiplayer paranormal investigation game in which a group of gamers — players can work solo, or in teams of up to four — visit locations that are suspected to be haunted, and have to identify and hunt the ghost before it manages to either drain them of their sanity or outright kill them. In the game, there are 24 specific varieties of ghost available, as well as particular tools available to the players to collect evidence of the hauntings.
The game launched in late 2020, and quickly caught on with players — within weeks, it was both a best-seller and one of the most-viewed games on Twitch, outperforming Among Us and Fortnite for a period; per Blumhouse’s official announcement of the movie, the game has passed 23 million global sales as of writing.
