It used to be that planeswalkers made scant appearances in Magic: The Gathering's Limited format. Because ultimately, there aren't going to be a plethora of planeswalker cards in a booster draft box at your local Friday Night Magic event, right? You've got one or two at most, maybe. Well, all of that is changing with Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Reality Fracture set. 

At a press event for Reality Fracture, game designers Mark Rosewater and Yoni Skolnik revealed that the set's focus on planeswalker Jace Beleren will result in planeswalkers "matter[ing] a lot more in Limited," as Skolnik put it. Common cards in Reality Fracture will be able to create planeswalkers in the form of Jace tokens, as part of an as-yet-unnamed mechanic that Rosewater described as akin to amass with “a really big tweak on it.” 

This ability is the main mechanic of the Reality Fracture set, Rosewater emphasized. And because of how bold of a creative choice this is, it was understandable a bit controversial for Reality Fracture playtesters. That is, until they actually started playing with the cards. 

"There's not a lot of common cards that make planeswalkers, I mean, ever. We've never done that before. So it's a really fun mechanic; it's really out there. When we first started playtesting with it... we got more comments on it than any other mechanic," Rosewater said. 

"A lot of people questioned it at first," Skolnik began, "you know, making planeswalker tokens at common, but as soon as they played one game with it, it just felt very natural, and folks loved it." 

Prerelease for Reality Fracture begins on September 25 and runs until October 1. The set releases the next day on October 2.
