Jim Carrey - and his glorious mustache - is back as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The rumors of his retirement have apparently been greatly exaggerated.

You can’t keep a good villain down, even if they get a giant robot dropped on them at the end of a movie. That’s why we’re once again getting to watch Jim Carrey prance, dance, and spread a little chaos on our screens in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The announcement comes after the legendary comedic actor had hinted that he was going to retire from acting after 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The news that Jim Carrey is returning as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was first reported by Variety. Normally, bringing back a big star for the third film in a successful franchise would be a no-brainer, but Carrey himself cast doubt about his return. During the press tour for the previous installment, the Dumb and Dumber actor told Access Hollywood that he was “fairly serious” about retiring from acting at the time.

“I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break,” he explained during the interview, leaving the door half-open for his return. “I really like my quiet life, and I really like putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life. And I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

However serious Jim Carrey might have been about retiring at the time, Paramount Pictures did something to lure him away from his quiet life. With an expected release date of December 2024, Sonic the Hedgehog will see Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik have to deal with not one but two hedgehogs as Sonic will be joined by his extra-edgy counterpart, Shadow, in the upcoming sequel.
