There's a saying that pop culture is cyclical, and that's certainly the case with The Baby-Sitters Club, the book series by Ann M. Martin that is beloved by millennials. To my surprise, I discovered that kids today love The Baby-Sitters Club novels and graphic novels despite the fact that their source material is, well, a bit old at this point.
Now, The Baby-Sitters Club will be adapted into a stage musical, featuring music and lyrics by KPop Demon Hunters composer Mark Sonnenblick, as Deadline reports. This isn't the first time that The Baby-Sitters Club has made the transmedia jump: the series was adapted into a Netflix show, and it's also been adapted as a feature film by Sony Pictures, a TV show by HBO, and, of course, the aforementioned graphic novels.
The show's premise is as follows: twelve years after the dissolution of The Baby-Sitters Club, twentysomethings Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, and Stacey return back to their hometown of Stoneybrook, Connecticut, "to honor the pact their 13-year-old selves made to reunite." With a homecoming comes the chance to ruminate on both their past and present.
Speaking to the show's music, composer Mark Sonnenblick said, “Though their triumphs and struggles and crushes are evergreen, these are girls of the ’80s and ’90s. So the score’s inspired by some of our favorites – Sheryl Crow, Indigo Girls, Shania Twain. We’re just very excited for everyone to hang out with the club in Stoneybrook, whether it’s your first time or your five hundredth.” As the child of a mother who loved listening to Indigo Girls in the '90s, I just felt a pain in my chest.
As per Deadline, "an exclusive industry presentation is scheduled for November 13 in New York City, with plans for a theatrical premiere in Spring 2027." So keep your eyes peeled.
