Veronica Roth has already finished the sequel to dystopian romance Seek the Traitor's Son

Roth's dystopian romance series, The Burning Empire, is not only getting a second entry after Seek the Traitor's Son, but at BookCon 2026, the author confirmed it was complete

In Veronica Roth's upcoming book series, the Burning Empire, a select percentage of the population can see into the future. And recently, Roth's many fans got their own taste of that superpower. Specifically, they received a prophecy in the form of Roth not only confirming that the second book in the series is upcoming, but that she's already finished writing it.

This parcel of prognostication came from BookCon 2026, where Roth was the subject of a jam-packed spotlight panel. As you might have guessed if you've been keeping up with Roth's career, a great deal of the panel was dedicated to Seek the Traitor's Son, the first entry into the Burning Empire series. In the far-flung dystopia at the heart of the saga, some of the world's population is infected by a fatal disease, which not only has the ability to resurrect its dead, but to bring them back with the gift of prophecy.

At one point in the panel, Roth was asked if she would rather be gifted that ability or, like another population of the globe in her books, the ability to see perfectly into the past.

"No one wants to see the future," answered the Divergent author, "And I think in the second book - which is done, by the way - the second book deals with that a lot more."

Way to bury the lead, Veronica! While Roth didn't get into any more specifics - including the novel's title or release date - it's still a pretty big revelation for fans, especially considering that Seek the Traitor's Son is already confirmed for the fast-approaching release date of May 12.

"The past helps you to make sense of what's going on around you," Roth continued, "And wouldn't it be nice to know what actually happened in the past, as opposed to the history that we've been taught? You know who gets to decide what kind of history we hear?"

I mean, we can't deny Roth's point - we wouldn't mind knowing exactly what happened in the past, either. Especially if the specific historical moment we got a window into is the one when Roth sent this mysterious manuscript to an editor.
