Chris Evans is certainly insisting he's not coming back to the MCU, but should we believe him?
While promoting his new film, Materialists, Chris Evans opened up about how "it's sad to not be back with the band" for Avengers: Doomsday

These days, it feels like no one is ever completely done with Marvel Studios. Sure, I'm painting with a broad brush here, but as the MCU moves into its next chapter with a whole new squad of Avengers, there has been a considerable sense of déjà vu. For starters, we saw Tim Blake Nelson reprise his role from 2008's The Incredible Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World in February, while Faran Tahir will jump back into the saddle for the upcoming Vision show as the Ten Rings leader who kidnapped Tony Stark in the first Iron Man movie. And, of course, Robert Downey, Jr. is playing Doctor Doom in next year's Avengers: Doomsday. All roads lead back to the first Obama term, it seems like.
With a new era for the MCU in full swing, you might be wondering what this could mean for Chris Evans, who officially retired from his Captain America duties in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. Evans last appeared in the MCU as the Human Torch from 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four films in 2024's Deadpool and Wolverine. But is that all for the Captain America of yore? It seems like it.
Speaking with Screen Rant about his new film, Materialists, written and directed by Celine Song, Evans had this to say: "I mean, it's sad to be away. It's sad to not be back with the band, but I'm sure they're doing something incredible, and I'm sure it's going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren't invited to the party."
It's worth noting that in the lead-up to Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield dodged questions about his rumored appearance in the film, denying that he was going to be in it at all. And of course he ended up being in it. With the level of secrecy that the MCU operates within, who knows if Evans's statement is a deflection or not.
That said, it's good to see Evans making auteur-driven work again. He's worked with Danny Boyle (Sunshine), Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer), Rian Johnson (Knives Out), and Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) for goodness' sake, and now he can add Celine Song to that list. What's better than that? (Don't say Evans returning to the MCU as Captain America.)
