Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista is coming back to action movies in a big way, circling both Highlander and Road House 2 for Amazon MGM

Dave Bautista is reportedly closing in to play The Kurgan in Amazon MGM's Highlander remake, and we're here for it

Never underestimate Dave Bautista. He's grown enormously in his acting career thus far, imbuing his performance as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies with a lovable sense of complexity and inspiring people around the world to wear tiny glasses because of his appearance in Knock at the Cabin. Not to mention, he was a great addition to the cast of Rian Johnson's whodunnit in Glass Onion.

And now, Bautista is set to expand his career further. According to Deadline, the former wrestler is reportedly closing deals to star as the villain in Amazon MGM's Highlander remake, a role originally played by Clancy Brown. Likewise, Road House 2 will feature Jake Gyllenhaal as an ex-UFC fighter, so I can't imagine that Bautista wouldn't swing his fists at least once in that film.

With this in mind, it could be said that Bautista is firmly entering his villain era onscreen. Or rather, cementing it at least. But this trajectory has been something the actor has been slowly building towards over the years. In the Ip Man spinoff film, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy from 2018, Bautista played the film's Big Bad, squaring off against Zhang Jin's Master Z in colonial Hong Kong (and it was a great film!). Bautista also played Glossu Rabban Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve's Dune films, so he's been working his way towards this for years.

While I'm lukewarm on the original Highlander film (I just can't buy Christopher Lambert as Scottish), Bautista as The Kurgan has piqued my interest. Clancy Brown made a meal out of that role in the original film, and Bautista's physicality can certainly match up to the hulking physique expected from The Kurgan. Lots to look forward to!
