Legend of Zelda movie jumps from 2027 Godzilla clash into the void left by Marvel's Avengers: Secret Wars

There's a new date for Sony's The Legend of Zelda, and fans should be excited about the shift

You might remember that we told you that Nintendo’s live-action Legend of Zelda movie was set to hit theaters in the same week as Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, setting up a Monsterverse/Hyrule showdown that you didn’t even know you wanted. Well… you’re going to have to wait a little longer for that clash of the titans, as Zelda is making a move that should get fans very excited.

As announced on social media, the movie will move from its March 26, 2027 slot to May 7, 2027. “This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027,” read the announcement. “It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”

To offset any disappointment fans might have about an additional six week wait for the movie, here are a couple of reasons why this shift is a good sign. Firstly, as the announcement suggests, it offers more time to make the movie in the first place, avoiding the need to cut corners or rush effects in order to make its release date. We're reminded of the saying, "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad," which often attributed to Legend of Zelda exec Shigeru Miyamoto, even though he didn't actually say it.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the move to the first weekend in May 2027 — a slot recently vacated by Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars — suggests that Sony is feeling particularly excited about the movie’s potential to be one of the big movies of the year, setting it up as the opening salvo in that summer’s blockbuster season. This isn’t a release slot given to movies that the studio feel nervous about, and Legend of Zelda moving from a late Spring to opening Summer slot should be taken as a vote of significant confidence on the studio’s part.

The movie will be directed by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Wes Ball, from a screenplay from T.S. Nowlin, best known for his work on the Maze Runner movies. No casting announcements have been made as yet, but we can only hope they’re forthcoming.
