Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield was "disappointed" he couldn't be in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, but was "very, very glad" Jacob Elordi got the gig

Garfield was once poised to star opposite Oscar Isaac as the Creature in del Toro's adaptation, and now, the ex-Spider-Man is speaking out about the role

While the geek world waits for news as to whether Andrew Garfield will ever play Spider-Man again, there's at least one creature of Amazing Fantasy that we're sad to know he'll seemingly never play. See, Garfield was just about ready to play the Creature in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, but a last-minute decision saw him drop out, replaced by the (incredible, in this writer's opinion) Jacob Elordi. Now, the Once and Maybe Future Peter Parker is going on record with how he feels about the opportunity, and to put it simply, it seems to be 'bittersweet.'

Speaking with Deadline to promote his new psychological thriller After the Hunt, Garfield recounted to his interviewer that, "I was just with Jacob Elordi, who ended up playing the character of The Creature, in Marrakech so I was hearing about how amazing and satisfying that was for him. So I'm very, very glad that it was him doing it."

And yet, with that gladness (which seems genuine to me, reader), must come the sense of an incredible missed opportunity. I mean, this is Guillermo del Toro we're talking about, right?

"I'm, of course, disappointed that I didn't get to do it," continued the Hacksaw Ridge Oscar nominee, "Because I love Guillermo [del Toro] and I love Oscar [Isaac] and everyone that he assembled. But meeting Jacob felt really serendipitous so that I could really see and hear that, 'No, maybe he needed that experience more than me.' That was cool, to feel that he had a really spectacular time on that job."

Speaking as someone who absolutely adored Elordi's performance in the new adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic, I can say I'm still at least curious as to what Garfield would do in a role that's as not-quite-human as the Creature's, to say nothing of what he would do with a team of really talented makeup SFX artists.

Ah well, DC needs a new Swamp Thing, don't they?

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is streaming on Netflix now.
