Jason Momoa expands video game movie slate with Helldivers after Minecraft and Street Fighter

Helldivers will be Jason Momoa's third video game adaptation in three years following both Minecraft and Street Fighter.

Jason Momoa seems to believe there is a future in live-action video game adaptations. After starring in 2025’s Minecraft and the upcoming Street Fighter adaptation, he’s already got his next film based on a beloved video game lined up, as the news that he’ll be starring in the Helldivers movie from Sony Pictures.

Originally announced in January 2025, the Helldivers film is slowly picking up steam. Justin Lin is attached to direct and now Jason Momoa is set to star. Plot details haven’t been released, but it is expected that the film will follow the games’ lead as a satirical take on warfare and military propaganda. The tone of the games is close to Starship Troopers, with an emphasis on the absurdity and pointlessness of war over anything else.

While he has largely been known for his impressive physique and for playing stoic characters in Game of Thrones or Dune, Jason Momoa’s role in Minecraft showed he was able to flex some comedic muscles as well. Interestingly, the tone of Helldivers is similar to Momoa’s new role in the DCU; Lobo himself was originally designed as a send-up of intentionally gritty comics of the late 80s and early 90s. If the Helldivers movie stays true to the original games, it could be quite comfortable territory for this phase of Jason Momoa’s career.

Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin and starring Jason Momoa, is due out in cinemas on November 10, 2027. It will mark the third year in a row that Momoa has starred in a big-screen video game adaptation.
