Did Jennifer Love Hewitt hallucinate the internet's favorite fact about I Know What You Did Last Summer? It kind of seems like she did

So, a kid didn't actually direct THAT famous scene from I Know What You Did Last Summer

With so many 90s horror movies getting reboots or remakes (did you know there was a remake of Urban Legend recently? Wild), there's never been a better time to take a look back on the mythology surrounding these films.

Luckily for us, Vulture did a deep dive into one of the most famous moments in slasher film history - the moment in I Know What You Did Last Summer when a frustrated, at the end of her rope, Jennifer Love Hewitt screams, "What are you waiting for?!" into the sky. Back in 2018, Hewitt had recounted to Us Weekly that the scene wasn't part of the original plan for the movie, but instead came from a contest winner at the last minute.

"So here’s what’s crazy about that. That scene was actually directed by a kid who won a contest to come on and create a moment for the movie, and it became the biggest part of the movie,” the actress said at the time. “I was literally like, ‘are you kidding me right now?’” she continued, summarizing her stunned response at the time. “Then we were doing it, and it was amazing.”

The only problem is, no-one else seems to know what Hewitt was talking about.

Folks who worked on I Know What You Did Last Summer as well as its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, weren't able to corroborate Hewitt's version of the events for Vulture. In fact, the director of the first film, Jim Gillespie, and cinematographer Denis Crossan both said that the "What are you waiting for?!" line was in the script written by Kevin Williamson before they even started shooting the film. How about that?

So why did Hewitt say that a kid made up that line? In the spirit of an episode of Buzzfeed Unsolved, this question may have to remain, at least until Hewitt addresses it, unsolved. Representatives for Hewitt did not respond to Vulture's requests for comment, nor did Sony Pictures. So don't hold your breath.
