John Hughes made mixtapes featuring the Beatles and new wave bands for his teenage actors

If you ever watched any of John Hughes’s teen flicks, then you would know the director had an awesome taste in music. Films like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, and Sixteen Candles were known for their memorable soundtracks.
With that in mind, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that John Hughes made his own mixtapes. According to The Breakfast Club star Anthony Michael Hall, Hughes would share these tapes with his young actors.
“I know how much music meant to [John Hughes],” Hall says during a panel at Florida Supercon. “John would make us mix tapes. He was incredible. He was always dressing cool. He was one of the first guys dressed in Jordans. John was cool man. He had those glasses on. He was always smoking cigarettes. He was truly a great collaborator. Just open hearted.”
The tapes featured a mix of new music, and bands that influenced Hughes in his younger days like the Beatles.
“That scene in The Breakfast Club where Paul Gleason is talking to John Kapelos, and he says, ‘Who did you want to be when you were growing up.’ And he says, ‘I wanted to be John Lennon.’ So, he had major influences there. He was a lover of music.”
If any of Hughes’s former actors still have their mixtapes, can they do us a favor and share the track listing? I want to make a Spotify playlist.
