Regardless of how you feel about the first Jurassic World trilogy, I think we can all agree that those films lack the careful directorial attention of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park films. Whether or not that's a good thing is entirely up to you, but speaking for myself, I have a lot of hope riding in Jurassic World Rebirth because the film is written by David Koepp - who co-wrote the original Jurassic Park film with novelist Michael Crichton. While Spielberg isn't back to direct Jurassic World Rebirth, it turns out that he was still in conversation with Koepp during the six months that the latter was writing Rebirth's script.
In an interview at the Jurassic World Rebirth premiere posted to Twitter, Deadline asked David Koepp about whether or not Spielberg was involved in this film. Koepp said that Spielberg "was very involved," and that Spielberg's presence was "one of the reasons why" Koepp came on board for the film to begin with. "Steven [Spielberg] was deeply involved from the beginning," Koepp began. "For the six months that we were working on the script, it was really just him and me, and I'd get his notes, I'd send him my ideas, we'd work, we'd work, we'd work."
For the 1993 Jurassic Park film, it should also be noted that Spielberg worked closely with Michael Crichton, who wrote the original Jurassic Park books. Crichton died in 2008, and it's fair to say that the first Jurassic World film trilogy from Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World: Dominion) was a far cry from the more scientifically accurate feel of Crichton's books. For Jurassic Park fans looking to see Jurassic World return to the feel of the books and Spielberg's films, a Koepp and Spielberg collaboration is probably as close as we're going to get.
Jurassic World Rebirth is directed by Gareth Edwards, who directed the stellar 2014 Godzilla film alongside Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Sure, Spielberg isn't at the helm of Rebirth, but all of us dinosaur fans are in good hands with Edwards at the wheel.
