Vision actor Paul Bettany says he's pretty sure he'll be in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars, but Marvel could change its plans at any moment

Is Paul Bettany's Vision in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars? The actor says he "thinks so"

Avengers: Doomsday has a massive cast featuring dozens of characters from the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and more, and it's very likely we still don't know everyone who will appear. Though he hasn't been confirmed for the cast, Vision actor Paul Bettany says he's pretty sure he'll show up either in Doomsday or its follow up Avengers: Secret Wars. Still, he leaves the caveat that Marvel could change course at any moment.

"I think so. I think that, you know, as much as - touch wood, it keeps the kids in private school - as much as you know anything going on at Marvel," Bettany explained during an appearance on podcast Happy Sad Confused "Or they change their mind, or they - you know, you just really do never know."

Bettany is no stranger to surprises from Marvel Studios. In fact, when half the Avengers died in Avengers: Infinity War, most of the cast had no idea until their death scenes began filming.

"It's true that you never know, by the way," Bettany continued. "When we all died [in Avengers: Infinity War], we found out on the day. They took us into a trailer with pre-vis, and everybody was sitting there going, 'Oh, I die.' Nobody knew. We didn't know. So you really don't know. They really do keep this stuff very secret."

Marvel's changing plans have become something of a hallmark for the studio, especially since 2020's pandemic shutdowns and the subsequent writer and actor strikes of 2023 caused basically every entertainment company in the world to shift their schedules and make hard choices about which productions to pursue.

Marvel has also become notorious for hiding spoilers for its films in trailers and promotional material by altering or deleting scenes from the actual movies. The most well-known example of Marvel's willingness to go out of its way to hide surprises from fans comes from the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War, which showed the Hulk in action in Wakanda. However, the actual film features Bruce Banner piloting the Hulkbuster armor - a bait-and-switch that angered fans so much it led to lawsuits over false advertising.

The studio has been a bit more subtle in its manipulations lately, excluding Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire from the trailers for 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home to keep their inclusion secret from the public, though many fans were already counting on them appearing. Marvel may also be pulling a similar trick in the trailers for this year's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which seem to omit certain characters from scenes where it looks like more people should appear.

Bettany is at least confirmed to return as Vision in October's VisionQuest, which continues the saga of the android Avenger... potentially even leading directly into December's Avengers: Doomsday. Who can say?
