Marvel Studios' X-Men movie will be "youth-oriented" in terms of tone, story & cast - sorry, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine!
If Feige is correct, Jake Schreier - whose Thunderbolts (or were they New Avengers?) ended the MCU's Phase Five - is set to begin a whole new era of MCU movies

After months of speculation (and even a slight confirmation from Ryan Coogler), Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has been officially confirmed as the director of the upcoming X-Men movie set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The confirmation was made by no less than Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who even went on to explain (a little bit of) what the film will look like.
Feige made the confirmation suring a roundtable interview promoting Fantastic Four: First Steps, which kicks off the MCU's Phase Six. Films. At the event was ComicBook.com, who reported on Feige's statements in an article published July 20.
"It’s official," Feige said, "Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky [...] We’re very, very lucky to have him and very excited to have him. And so we’re beginning. It’s all starting now. The script’s underway."
What's that script about? Well, Feige's not exactly being forthcoming. In fact, the MCU captain pointed out the decades upon decades of comic book history that would have to go into an X-Men movie, saying there are "so many sagas within sagas for X-Men that that’s part of what we’re talking about now — which saga to grow and build to while doing the most important thing, which is introducing all of these characters and giving them their due in our first film."
However, Feige would divulge that the X-Men would be "youth-oriented," pointing to Schreier's skill as tapping into a younger demographic as making him the ideal director for the job.
"Jake’s an incredibly smart guy," Feige concluded, "And he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker [...] We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts*. And if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions, he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic. He’s younger than me for sure, but he’s tapped into that in a way that I think was important for Thunderbolts*, much more important for X-Men. Because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie."
So what does this mean? Will X-Men be about younger mutants joining the already established Xavier School as run by Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the like? Or will we focus on younger versions of those characters themselves, similar to what we got in X-Men: First Class? Only time will tell, I suppose.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is in theaters July 25.
