My fellow Trekkies, we've got some good news: there is a new, original Star Trek film in development at Paramount from the writers of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. It's not currently known where things are going, but a destination has never been a core element in Star Trek (okay, maybe it was in Voyager, but I digress).
Deadline reports that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are writing, producing, and directing a new Trek film for Paramount. At this moment in time, scant details are available about when the film is set and whether or not it will feature any existing characters. That said, the Deadline article did say that, "While not confirmed, sources also add it’s likely that new characters will be featured in this version." Frankly, outer space is pretty huge, so that doesn't give us a whole lot to go off of at this moment in time, but that does make me think that the film probably won't be the gritty Chief O'Brien origin story that I've always wanted to see.
In addition, the story that Goldstein and Daley pitched reportedly "falls in line with Skydance founder David Ellison’s recent comments on an earnings call where he said the next Star Trek film would not be a sequel in the Chris Pine-led series but something different with new actors." That certainly makes it sound like the film will be separate from the Kelvin-verse of Star Trek films starring Chris Pine, which exist within a separate continuity from the Star Trek TV shows. But again, we won't know for sure until we get more details.
It's worth noting that one of the least-explored time periods within Trek remains what Modiphius's Star Trek Adventures tabletop roleplaying game defines as the "Foundational Years" of 2063-2199. This is the setting of the Star Trek Enterprise show that you would be forgiven for having forgotten about, as well as some scenes in the Star Trek: First Contact film from 1996. It's the period in which Earth first made contact with Vulcans and was in ruins after World War Three, so there's plenty more to be fleshed out about how warp technology was developed and such. Another frontier left under-explored is the Post-War and Reconstruction period from 2380-2401, which so far is home to only Lower Decks and Picard.
Anyways, there's a lot to be excited about here. If Goldstein and Daley can come up with anything half as funny as the "instant kill" gag from Spider-Man: Homecoming with their Star Trek, I'll be satisfied.
Space may be the final frontier, but there's no end to Popverse's love of the Star Trek universe. Hop aboard the starship Enterprise with our Star Trek watch order, explore strange new worlds with our upcoming Star Trek TV shows and movies list, seek out the new life of the franchise, and boldly go where no Star Trek film has ever gone before - with Quentin Tarantino?
