Stop me if you've heard this before, but how about a movie where Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey team up to fight dragons? No, it's not a medieval movie - it's set in the near future where dragons have taken over the world. And McConaughey is playing the most American of Americans, complete with a shaved head, tribal tattoos, and his own personal tank. I'll throw in some extras: Gerard Butler, the voice of the Witcher Doug Cockle, and the actor behind the impetuous prince from Game of Thrones, Joffrey.

Sold? Well, I've got good news. They made it 23 years ago, and it's called Reign of Fire.

The battle ignites for McConaughey & Bale

While 'A Matthew McConaughey movie' or 'A Christian Bale film' carries a certain weight these days, befitting the string of great movies they've done in the past 20 years, in 2002 they hadn't yet achieved that. At its best, in 2002 'A Matthew McConaughey movie' description conjured romantic comedies like The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days; but this, Reign of Fire, wasn't that.

With Reign of Fire, the cast and crew created a near-future world where an accidental mining disaster re-awakened dragons buried underneath the ground; dragons who took over the world, leading humanity to live (or at best, try to survive) in Mad Max-ian communes where they scrounged for food and told spoken word versions of Star Wars because the film - and the film industry, and everything with it - were charred to embers by those dragons.

For Bale and McConaughey, it was a chance at a mid-budget action movie with special effects. For McConaughey specifically, he came with a chip on his shoulder, struggling to get rid of his romance star vibes.

"The first A.D. came into the trailer where we were all having our makeup and shit done, and he was, like, 'Guys, I need your attention, please.' And we were, like, 'Yeah?' And he said, 'Um, Mr. McConaughey’s gonna arrive on set in about 15 minutes, and I have to give you a directive, which comes from the producers—that you are not to call him ‘Matthew’ or ‘Mr. McConaughey' or anything to do with his real life. You must call him Van Zan,'" Reign of Fire co-star Alexander Siddig told AV Club in 2015. "Van Zan was his character name."

"'And even if you meet him outside in the road, even if you meet him out in town in Dublin,' where we were shooting this movie, 'you must call him Van Zan.' And that is exactly what I remember about that movie, because as that first A.D. left the building, I shouted—rather lamely—'And he’s got to call me Elvis!' But he didn’t call me Elvis. In fact, he didn’t call me anything!"

According to reports, McConaughey's on-set intensity (and workout regimen) were such that Christian Bale aborted plans to lose weight to appear skinny and malnourished for the role (as he has been prone to do with some movies), and instead began bulking up.

So why didn't Reign of Fire make an impact for people? I blame the crowded year it was released - 2002. Not only did you have Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets, but also Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film and the second Men In Black film, which Reign of Fire opened directly against. Competition at the movie theater is a real thing; from you buying your movie ticket in 2002, but also to the publicity, marketing, and buzz of the year; for every winner, there's a loser that could have won if things were different, and the movie industry is no different.

Another factor in that is that Christian Bale wasn't well known then - he was still six years ahead of his first Batman film - and Matthew McConaughey was, as we mentioned, typecast by Hollywood (and us) for romantic comedies, to the point he quit acting soon after for several years before re-emerging as a more versatile actor a decade later.

Am I saying Reign of Fire is one of the best movies of all time? No. But as we all lament the lack of b-movies and I personally lament the inability of the modern mainstream public to like a movie if it's just good and not great, Reign of Fire stood out to me when I watched it in theaters in 2002 - and in the years since as Bale and McConaughey became who they are now. If Reign of Fire was made in 2025 with the same cast, it'd be the tentpole movie of the year.
