Scott Pilgrim moviemakers didn't let Toronto homeowners know how famous their houses were, admits Edgar Wright

Your home could be an iconic location in a comic book, and you wouldn’t know it. Well, maybe not your home in particular, but there is precedent for something like this happening. The year was 2009, and there were a few Toronto residents that had no idea that their homes were featured in the Bryan Lee O’Malley comic Scott Pilgrim. This came in handy for director Edgar Wright as he was scouting locations for the film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
“Doing Scott Pilgrim in Toronto was just like a gift, because the book was so recent that for the locations that are in the book [O’Malley] still had the digital photos that he did for reference, so we could go to the exact location and sometimes those people who own those houses had no idea that they were in the comic,” Edgar Wright revealed during a panel at GalaxyCon Richmond 2026.
He went on, “Scott Pilgrim’s apartment in Scott Pilgrim, it’s just a random garage door. I sort of said to the location manager, don’t let them know that it’s in the book, because then they’ll charge us five times the amount. Let’s just pretend. So, when we went to that door, we would look at the ones on either side and pretend we were interested in them, just because we didn’t want the owner of the house to realize, ‘Hey, that’s my door.’”
Now you know, if a location manager ever asks to put your home in a Hollywood film, read some comic books to see if any of the houses look familiar. Who knows, you might be able to squeeze some extra money out of the studio. If not, you still got to read some fun comic books, which is never a bad thing.
