Star Wars: Starfighter screens a secret trailer at D23, and releases a retro poster for everyone else

Here’s your first look at the Ryan Gosling Star Wars film, Starfighter... kind of

In case you need reminding, there is a Star Wars movie coming out next spring. And now, we’ve gotten our first look at it with a teaser dropped at Disney’s D23 Expo 2026 - but only if you were lucky enough to be in the room where it happened. (No, that's not a Hamilton reference.)

Star Wars: Starfighter is led by Ryan Gosling, with a cast rounded out by Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Yes, you read that right: Mia Goth is going to be in a Star Wars movie. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper.

Starfighter takes place five years after the events of Episode IX: Rise of Skywalker - which would put it at 40 ABY (after the Battle of Yavin, AKA the climactic battle from the original Star Wars movie). That also makes it the furthest out in the Star Wars timeline fans have ever seen

Gosling appeared onstage with Levy, and described his character Kade Auberon as being "from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built." What makes that starfighter particularly unusual is that it's a repurposed Imperial ship.

While fans who didn't make it to D23 didn't get a chance to see the trailer (I suspect we might have to wait until December for that; I'd lay money it'll make it into theaters to accompany Avengers: Doomsday), we did get the chance to see the new poster for the movie, which features a very familiar remake of the Star Wars logo:

Yes, that's the Star Wars logo used for the original theatrical poster for the first movie, way back in 1977... and notably not used on official Star Wars movie posters ever since 1980's The Empire Strikes Back. Looks like Lucasfilm and the Starfighter crew are taking the 50th anniversary celebrations for Star Wars in 2027 seriously.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on May 28, 2027.
