The Mummy Returns star Oded Fehr says he was punching thin air during the iconic bus fight scene because the undead creatures were CGI

There were no stunt actors in The Mummy Returns bus fight, so Oded Fehr threw himself around an empty bus, fighting thin air

Remember the iconic bus sequence from The Mummy Returns? The next time you watch it, pay close attention to Medjai chieftain Ardeth Bay. When the character is fighting the mummies, he’s actually tossing himself around an empty bus. In other words, there were no stunt actors wearing motion capture suits during production - something that led to an absurd filming experience that has become one of Oded Fehr’s favorite memories of the franchise.

“I’ve got to say, a scene that I remember - the fighting in the bus,” Ardeth Bay actor Oded Fehr announced during a Mummy spotlight panel at MegaCon 2026. “I was thinking to myself, ‘Aright, they’re going to have the stunt guys. I’m going to be fighting stunt guys in blue suits or whatever.’ And I get to set, and for me, there was nobody there.”

Fehr said that producers told him that everything would be fixed in post-production. “They’re like, ‘Yeah, just fight mummies and we’ll put them in. Just fight them. Go ahead.’ So, I literally just threw myself all over the bus. And they’re like, ‘Oh, ouch. Do you want something?’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, I’m good. I’m fine.’ Just throwing myself. I was black and blue by the end of it, but it was amazing because then they had all the guys in there.”

The full scene is on YouTube if you want to watch it again. Knowing that Fehr is fighting against nobody makes it an interesting viewing experience.
