What inspired The Social Network Part II? The January 6 attack, says Aaron Sorkin

Based off of the Wall Street Journal's The Facebook Files, The Social Network Part II isn't a direct sequel to the Jesse Eisenberg-starring film, but a follow-up investigating the harm the social media platform has done to society

Finally, the sequel to that early 10's Andrew Garfield movie we all wanted is happening! Who's excited for The Social Network Part II??

(Wait, what did you think we were talking about?)

Deadline reported June 25 that, after years of teasing ideas for the project, West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin has finally committed to making The Social Network Part II. But the film won't just be a direct sequel to the first, rather a thematic "follow-up" to explore the widespread effects Facebook has had on American culture. In fact, Sorkin reportedly found his way into the sequel after an event he believes was in part caused by Facebook: The January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol building.

That said, Deadline stresses that the film will not be a January 6 movie, but rather explore "Facebook’s effect on teens, preteens, violence and countries outside the U.S." If you want to know exactly what that entails, check out the Wall Street Journal's The Facebook Files, a series of articles published in 2021 that delves into the exact subject matter and which will serve as a basis for the movie.

Also differentiating the film from its predecessor is the fact that Aaron Sorkin will be both writing the script and directing the movie this go-round, taking up the chair from the first film's director, David Fincher (Popverse readers know that Fincher is currently busy prepping for the Quentin Tarantino Netflix series The Adventures of Cliff Booth). Other than Sorkin's, no other roles have been assigned in the film, and at this early stage, it's difficult to see which real people the actors will be playing.

But if we see anyone offering to cast "viking idiot in American flag paint," we'll let you know.
