A great murder mystery is a thing of joy. Not necessarily for the poor victim, but for everyone else involved. For the viewers, it is a chance to match wits with a killer to try to figure out the wheres, whats, whos, and whys of it all. For the cast of The Thursday Murder Club, however, it was a much more relaxing affair to film the Netflix movie. As Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan describe it, the whole thing was more like a college reunion than an acting job.

The pair recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where they discussed working on The Thursday Murder Club alongside the likes of Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie. With a cast that includes some of the best-known British actors of the last 30 years, it isn’t surprising that they have all worked together in one way or another over the years. “But you know the great thing about Thursday Murder Club,” explained Helen Mirren. “Was that we all kind of knew each other. I mean, I’d worked with Ben – Sir Ben, Sir Ben – in the theater when we were in, like, in our early 20s. So we knew each other really, really well.”

It wasn’t just her connection to Ben Kingsley that helped the cast form a tight bond on set. “Celie, I’ve worked with before. She was in Calendar Girls. She’s brilliant. Pierce, of course, we’d been, many years ago, in a film together. We hadn’t actually worked together… But it was like the coming together of a group of people who’d been to college or something. There was incredible closeness.”

“Hit the ground running on the very first day, you know?” Pierce Brosnan chimed in at this point. “And we just sat around, had lovely, lovely cups of tea, and then did a bit of acting.”

You can see the college reunion vibes when The Thursday Murder Club debuts on Netflix on August 28, 2025.
