Wicked: For Good's first trailer is aimed exclusively at people who were going to buy tickets for it anyway (but that's already a lot of people)
They put the big climatic song right in the trailer (and title) of Wicked: For Good), so we already know who they are hoping to get on board.

Once again, musical theater fans are ready to descend upon cinemas this November to see Wicked: For Good, the second part of Universal Studios’ film adaptation of the classic Broadway musical. The first trailer for the movie formerly known as Wicked Part 2 dropped this week and proved, once again, that this movie is aimed directly at fans who know the story and the songs.
We really enjoyed Wicked for what it was – a beautifully performed adaptation of the stage musical that had the poor taste to be way too long. It did a good job of bringing the biggest moments from the musical to life, particularly the iconic Defying Gravity. This trailer feels like it knows the people who are going to drive the marketing for Wicked: For Good are the people who’ve seen it on stage already.
In classic trailer fashion, we see most of the ensuing plot laid out before us. The love triangle between Fiyero, Elphaba, and Galinda. The appearance of Dorthey and her little dog too. We even hear a sizable chunk of For Good, the big emotional climax of the story. This is a trailer – and, presumably, a movie – aimed to excite people who know what they expect to see when they buy a ticket.
This isn’t a huge change from Wicked, which gave us most of the plot details for the movie in the first trailer. It did restrict the final song, the aforementioned Defying Gravity, to a few bars and that was drowned out with dialogue (aside from that final note, of course), but the whole plot was laid out immediately. So Universal knows who is driving the hype for Wicked: For Good, and it is people who are already fans of Wicked.
