Ahead of D23 Expo 2022, reports are emerging that The Acolyte, a new Star Wars series intended for Disney+, has found its male lead — and it’s a face familiar to audiences around the world.

Deadline is reporting that Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae will be joining the upcoming series, playing opposite the already announced Amandla Steinberg in the series assembled by Russian doll showrunner Leslye Headland, who’s serving as the show’s director, writer, and executive producer.

Details of who Lee will be playing are being kept under wraps, like the majority of information about the series at this point. What is known is that the show is set during the High Republic era of Star Wars canon, making it the first time that era will have appeared onscreen, having previously appeared only in novels and comic books. It’s believed that the title might refer to the Sith tradition of a Sith Lord training one individual to follow in their footsteps.

Beyond his Squid Game role as Seeing Gi-hun, Lee is a busy man; his directorial debut Hunt is expected to debut at the Cannes Film Festival, and he will be appearing as a presenter at the Emmy Awards next week, where he’s also nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

It’s possible that more information about The Acolyte will be revealed during Lucasfilm’s D23 Expo presentation this weekend; Popverse is going to be right there in the middle of everything, bringing you the news as it happens.

Even if The Acolyte stays under wraps this weekend, there’s sure to be a lot more revealed about all kinds of other Lucasfilm, Marvel, and other Disney projects at D23 Expo 2022. Keep up with Popverse’s coverage here.
