Star Wars: Andor had something special that Kenobi didn't, says Ewan McGregor: real locations

Ewan McGregor loved Andor so much he binged it and hoped he could appear in it.

The Star Wars prequels advanced filmmaking technologically, including creating whole characters and backgrounds with CGI and shooting on digital camera for the first time for a major Hollywood blockbuster.

"George [Lucas, Star Wars creator] was pioneering what we all only shoot on. You've got to fight hard to shoot on film these days," Ewan McGregor recalls at Fan Expo Chicago. "He pioneered that. He was at the cutting edge of that."

When McGregor filmed the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series years later, he acted in front of a 360-degree wraparound screen that projects the background. Unlike a blue screen or green screen, he could see the background that would end up in the film but still only had a small area to act in front of.

"With Andor, they decided not to use it. They used real locations. And I think that gave Andor something special," McGregor says continues.
