Marvel Comics' boss, Dan Buckley, may be leaving in the next few months, but before he goes, he has taken on a new job: comics editor. Buckley is currently Marvel's 'Head of Marvel Comics & Franchise' (formerly its publisher/president), but for the upcoming new alt-universe line Marvel Midnight, he is stepping out and also taking on the role/title of 'Executive Editor.'

The new title was revealed in a Friday press release from Marvel Comics, but overlooked by other outlets. Popverse has learned that this new, additional title is only for the Marvel Midnight line, and is part of a plan to have increased focus from the top of the company on down into what the company sees as a pivotal launch.
No reason was given for the change, but longtime Marvel staffer Tom Brevoort has and continues to be Marvel Comics' overal executive editor (as well as VP of publishing). This move comes as part of a decision to let Marvel Midnight cook an additional two months than originally planned, and is the first major move internally at the company since the layoff its longtime VP of sales & marketing, David Gabriel.

"The more we talked about Midnight, the more we realized it was far more than just the birth of another new universe—it was on an entirely different scale creatively, a doorway to something that was not only immediately exciting, but had immense long-term promise," Buckley said in the announcement of plans to delay and change up the launch plans for Marvel Midnight.
"When the clock strikes Midnight on October 7, these three series will unleash a bold new energy that we hope echoes throughout the industry for the foreseeable future," Buckley adds.
Could Buckley be angling for Marvel Midnight to be the bookend to his career, buttressing his fostering of Civil War, Secret Wars, and X-Men: Age of Krakoa? I don't think he'd mind, and neither would the new Marvel bosses.
The Marvel Midnight line launches October 7 with three ongoing series: Midnight X-Men, Midnight Spider-Man, and Midnight Fantastic Four.
