Mr. Drummond's surprise murder in Severance was originally a joke, then it got serious
Drummond’s death in the Severance season two finale was originally a joke pitch because the writers were bored

Apple TV+'s Severance season 2 finale was filled with twists, turns, and surprises. One of the biggest moments was when Mark (Adam Scott) accidentally killed Drummond (Darri Ólafsson) as he was transitioning to his outie. It turns out that moment was originally pitched as a joke when the writers were bored, and they decided it was interesting enough to include in the final script.
“The Drummond murder, I originally pitched as a joke,” showrunner Dan Erickson confesses during an appearance at PaleyFest LA 2025. “We were really tired, and I was like, ‘Eh, maybe he just severs and accidentally kills him.’ And Adam [Scott] was sitting across the table and was like, ‘That’s what we’re doing.’ That is now canon.”
In some ways this is funny, because it means Adam Scott is responsible for Drummond’s death in real life, and in the show.
Severance has been renewed for a third season. Let’s hope the writers room doesn’t get too bored, otherwise we might see more character deaths in the upcoming season.
