In 2016 Supergirl went through a reinvention. After one season on CBS, the superhero drama was moved to the CW, the channel’s sister network. This required moving the entire production from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and other cost-cutting measures, but series lead Melissa Benoist believes the move was one of the best things to happen to the show.
“Everything changed really,” Supergirl actress Melissa Benoist says during a panel at FanX Salt Lake 2025. “It’s a very different situation shooting in Los Angeles as opposed to Vancouver. That in itself was really different. Getting used to shooting in the rain. But also, it changed for the better, because I just felt great that I got to be a part of the club.”
The move put Supergirl on the same network as the CW’s other DC Universe shows, such as Arrow and The Flash. Supergirl had already crossed over with The Flash during her first season, but the move to Vancouver made future crossovers easier.
“It only enriched all of the shows whenever we connected. And I don’t know how you feel, but the crossovers were my favorite things to shoot. If it looked like we were having fun, it’s because we were. It was like a giant sleepover where everyone was in supersuits. We were all slap happy and delirious and having so much fun eating too much candy.”
