Dexter actor Michael C. Hall reveals that the killer's return stemmed from him asking a simple question; What if?

You can’t keep a good character down – and you apparently can’t keep a good serial killer dead, if Dexter’s return in Dexter: Resurrection is anything to go by. Because we all saw him die at the end of Dexter: New Blood, with a gunshot wound to the chest as he lay on the cold snow. But, like many great stories, Dexter returned from the dead because someone – in this case, actor Michael C. Hall – took a page out of Marvel's book and asked a simple question; What if?
During an appearance on The Late Show to celebrate his return to his most iconic role, Michael C. Hall was questioned about how Dexter came back. “It was very cold on that forest floor,” Michael C. Hall explained to host Stephen Colbert. “Slow your heart right down. His son was a pretty good shot but fortunately not quite good enough.”
That is the in-universe explanation, but the Dexter actor also provided the origins of the new show. “After enough time had passed, I was having a conversation with Marcos Siega, our director, and I was just missing the camaraderie, appreciating what a unique thing it is to work with people you love on something that you love, and I just said, ‘What if he didn’t die? Is that crazy? I mean, he’s a resilient guy.’”
That little conversation snowballed into Dexter: Resurrection, this time with Dexter Morgan attempting to save his son Harrison from becoming the same kind of man he is. “One thing led to another and the next thing I know this conversation had started about how that might happen and these things gain momentum.”
That momentum eventually led to Michael C. Hall’s return to the world of Dexter with new episodes chronicling how death changed him. And remember; if he dies again, he’s just a What If? question away from another glorious return.
