How Dexter: New Blood prequel helped Michael C. Hall and others find his character again for Resurrection

Michael C. Hall narrated Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel to New Blood, providing the bridge he needed to cross before Dexter: Resurrection

There is a lot of Dexter going around these days. This February, the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin wrapped up its first season, and a new series, Dexter: Resurrection, is coming this July 11. Dexter: Resurrection features Michael C. Hall back in the saddle as the serial killer with a code for the first time since Dexter: New Blood's conclusion in 2022.

Whew, now that we have our heads screwed on straight again, Hall recently opened up to Vanity Fair about how narrating Dexter: Original Sin helped ease him back into the character before he boarded Dexter: Resurrection.

"The character was severely traumatized by a lot of what happened to him in the original incarnation, and is only now at a place where he’s able to shed that,” Hall began, referring to how his narration in Original Sin takes place after the events of New Blood. (Yes, we are truly leaping across the timeline here; don't worry - we have a Watch Order to help you keep track of everything.) "Spending time with that [Original Sin] material helped embroider and color in what was maybe a line drawing or an outline that I had in my mind from the beginning—so it’s a tool for us," Hall said.

Dexter: Resurrection takes place after the events of New Blood, so that makes things easier at least. Hall will be joined by a stellar cast including novelist Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, David Dastmalchian, Peter Dinklage, and Uma Thurman. Vanity Fair describes Dinklage's character as a "billionaire venture capitalist with a dark side" (or in other words, water is wet) while Thurman plays "his mysterious head of security." The intrigue!

Dexter: Resurrection hits Paramount+ Premium on July 11, 2025.
