CGI can't handle how scary Fallout season 2's Deathclaws are, so they called in old-school puppetry
They're one of the most terrifying and iconic monsters in the Fallout universe, so it is good that Prime Video are making Deathclaws as scary as possible.

The first season of Fallout got a lot of things right. The Prime Video show captured the deeply anti-capitalist message of the games and the retro-future aesthetic that few other series can achieve. However, one thing was missing – the Deathclaws that roam the desolate wasteland. Well, the co-showrunner of Fallout has promised that season two will fix that – and that the Deathclaw we get to see will be terrifying because they are really there.
No, they didn’t create actual, living Deathclaws for the show – that would be both deeply disturbing and very rad. Instead, co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet has told Empire Magazine that they used a mixture of practical effects and CGI to create the monsters. Crucially, they wanted to use puppetry as much as they could. “We do things practically whenever possible… We want things to be tactile and tangible. It was only by using puppets, that are quite scary when you see them in person, that things feel deeply real.”
The absence of the iconic Deathclaws from Fallout season one was noticeable back in 2024, especially with so many elements of Fallout being so faithfully recreated in the show. Maybe it was budget issues or simply finding the right way to use the monsters in the show, but we’re very excited to see these tangible Deathclaws in Fallout season two when it comes out. Just how terrifying are these monsters? We can’t wait to find out.
Fallout Season 2 claws its way onto Prime Video on December 17, 2025, with new episodes following weekly from there.
