Delays are sometimes inevitable when you’re making a TV show, especially one on the epic scale of the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. What was originally meant for a late 2025 release date would eventually become an equally nebulous “early 2026” release. However, that has been narrowed down even further, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' release window coming faster than you think.
In the aftermath of the Emmys, where shows like The Penguin gave a very good showing for HBO and HBO Max, Casey Bloys spoke to Variety about what comes next. The CEO of HBO and Max Content was somewhat terse with some of his responses about release dates for shows in the network’s pipeline, but he did give a fairly definite answer when asked about the release date for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
“I’m going to say January. How about that?” he said. Which isn’t exactly a release date (January is a long month), but it is less ambiguous than the early 2026 release window we’d had before. This means that we’re just a few months away from a return to Westeros and the political drama of Game of Thrones.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R. R. Martin, which take place around 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones. This prequel shouldn’t be confused with the other prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, which is also expected to come out in 2026.
