CBS' Ghosts showrunner teases "big ideas" for this fall's season 5 - even bigger now that season 6 is already guaranteed

Ghosts showrunner Joe Wiseman and five cast members reveal lots of juicy details about Season 5.

There was a raucous haunting that happened at San Diego Comic-Con. A handful of the Woodstone Manor ghosts appeared to all of the living, along with co-showrunner Joe Wiseman, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Devan Chandler Long, Danielle Pinnock Asher Goodman, and Punam Patel to tell fans what they can expect from Season 5 the hit CBS series Ghosts, which began filming in July. Back in February, Ghosts was also picked up for a sixth season. That means the series now has a guaranteed minimum of 44 more episodes to play with as far as storylines go.

Danielle Pinnock rejoiced, “Job security is everything, ya’ll!”

Showrunner Joe Wiseman told the crowd that really helps ease the tension of now knowing how far they can go or introduce things, worrying about whether the complete runway is shorter than they think.

“We have some big ideas that we want to do, and sometimes we worry about not pulling the trigger on some of those because you don’t know how long you have. So having that long a horizon allows you to kind of be a little bit more patient and take your time.”

So, as fans go, they should be excited to have that many episodes in front of them because 99.9 percent of the mysteries have been explained, with the exception of one (how Sasappis died). They can continue building on the world now without knowing they need to explain how this ghost’s superpower works or how that character died.

So what did Wiseman actually reveal for Season 5? Quite a lot, actually. For starters, Flower’s power of giving a hallucinogenic high is going to evolve or be tinkered with. Look for another Halloween episode this season, featuring the mummy character that was briefly introduced in last season’s holiday episode.

There’s definitely more Patience coming soon, specifically a Puritan vs. the Devil, where we will see Patience square off with Elias showdown. There was a passing comment that Patience made earlier in the series about “the others.”

“It’s our intention to meet those 'others,'” added Wiseman.

Bela will have a larger role as an entrepreneur as she adds an events business into the fold and expands how Woodstone Manor and Jay’s restaurant Mahesh, can be used as additional sources of income since the B&B and restaurant keep struggling.

Utkarsh Ambudkar addressed a question by Patel about the big Season 4 cliffhanger, where Jay was tricked by Elias to give over his soul when he dies.

“It’ll be another exciting adventure for the ghosts, Sam and Jay to go on. I love when we all, as a family, work together against a common foe, when we’re not fighting or creating tension with each other.”

“I love when the whole team has a goal, and now we are united against Elias to save Jay’s soul, which I think creates a lot of really fun opportunities for the ensemble. You’ll see everybody working towards, hopefully, me staying alive.”

Ambudkar was also excited to have Punam around more because that means he actually gets to interact with a cast member besides Rose McIver who plays his wife Sam.

Then Wiseman dropped this nugget.

“Bela’s going to develop an interesting relationship with a ghost… who’s not Trevor.”

“Damn,” Grodman quipped back as the crowd gasped. “Trevor’s not going to be ready for that.”

Speaking of Trevor, his daughter, Abby Pinkus (Gideon Adlon) will return, which leads to more growth for Trevor as a character. She’s going to come work at the restaurant for a little bit. There’s been a real slow-burn to the on-off-again relationship between Trevor and Hetty, but it sounds like they’re going to turn up the heat on that.

“Calibrating and tightening that tension up and up and up and up has been so much fun,” Grodman teased. “I can’t wait to do more of that.”

This season’s big relationship story is going to be the one between Alberta and Pete after last season ended with them kissing. If you recall, Pete had just come back from breaking up with Donna, and for the first time, they are both available and know how the other feels about them. Just don’t think it’s going to go smoothly.

Pinnock admitted to the crowd that she’s a fan of the reality series, Love Island USA, and the relationship between Nic Vansteenberghe and Olandria Carthen, nicknamed “Nicolandria.” She likened Alberta and Pete’s exploration to be similar to that.

“I’m ready for 'Albetey' because Alberta is done with the bootleggers,” Pinnock affirmed. “She wants to live in a soft world era, a safe love, a soft love.” She’s excited by it because the writers told her that you learn a lot about your character when they’re in a relationship.

“Alberta is the greatest gift I could ask for… she’s a hot mess with a heart of gold.”

Ghosts returns to CBS and Paramount+ on October 16.
